Wind Wand, 1996

Wind Wand, 1996, fibre glass mast, plastic spheres, lamp, 25 metres tall. 

This is the first large, outdoor work built posthumously from plans and drawings left by the artist.  It soars 25 metres into the air and bobs and waves lazily in the breeze.  By night it emits a soft, red glow.  Lye said of his earlier, smaller Wands: 

“Their weight is so lightly balanced that if a bumble bee stood on the ball at the top they would dip a bit, and the more honey he carried the more it would dip.” – Len Lye
